Flashlights are a basic, yet essential piece of camping gear. While most flashlights serve the same purpose, there are some different options, as they vary in power/brightness, size, light source and type of batteries they use.
Tube Flashlights: Tube flashlights are common flashlights that use light bulbs and are powered by batteries. Flashlights come in different sizes that run on different battery sizes. Flashlight manufacturers often produce several models of the same flashlight that each run on different batteries.
LED Flashlights: Flashlight manufacturers are now producing a lot of their lights with LED (Light Emitting Diode) power. LED Flashlights do not have light bulbs and do not run on batteries. While early LED technology produced flashlights that were often dim, compared to their battery-powered counterparts, LED technology has quickly advanced, newer LED flashlights can be very bright and powerful. While LED flashlights might be more expensive than traditional battery-powered lights, they can save you money in the long run since you won’t have the frequent expense of new batteries! LED Flashlights typically have a lifespan of about 25 times greater than bulb flashlights! While you can certainly find cheap LED flashlights, they generally won’t be as bright as similarly priced battery-powered flashlights.
Solar Powered: New Technology has resulted in the release of some solar powered flashlights. Solar-powered flashlights are generally more expensive and are often not very bright, but we expect solar powered flashlights to be more popular in the future as the technology is perfected.
Headlamps: Headlamps are essentially flashlights that you strap on your head, allowing hands-free operation.
Popular high quality flashlight manufacturers include Maglite, Bushnell, Princeton-Tec, and Browning.
